Boston University Medical Center

The Center offers a wide array of evaluation and treatment options for patients with various voice and swallowing disorders including vocal cord paralysis, spasmodic dysphonia, acid reflux, vocal polyps and cysts, sulcus vocalis and vocal scarring, as well as singer's nodules and other disorders of professional voice. The center also offers diagnostic and treatment options for papillomas and early cancers of the larynx, and for swallowing and voice problems due to Parkinson's disease, stroke, and other neurological disorders.

This state-of-the-art voice center provides the full scope of diagnostic testing including videolaryngostroboscopy, acoustic analysis , in-office brush biopsy of laryngeal lesions, The swallowing center provides comprehensive swallowing evaluation including fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) with sensory testing (FEESST) and in-office transnasal esophagoscopy, as well as laryngeal electromyography, and manometry of the pharynx and upper esophageal sphincter. Modified barium swallow studies are done frequently, paired with esophagrams whenever indicated. Sophisticated measures of tongue force and respiration-swallowing coordination complement the imaging procedures.

A number of in-office therapies are available including botulinum toxin injections for spasmodic dysphonia and sialorrhea, pulsed-dye laser treatment for papilloma, dysplasia, and other vascular lesions of the larynx, and cidofovir injections for laryngeal papilloma.. In addition we provide state-of-the -art, minimally invasive, surgical interventions such as vocal cord augmentation for the paralyzed vocal cord, endoscopic laser removal of early cancers of the larynx. Swallowing and voice therapy (including singing voice therapy) is provided by speech-language pathologists with expertise in these areas.
